LHV is introducing Smart-ID+ authentication in the Internet Bank and the mobile app, which adds a new layer of security to customer logins. The solution will help reduce the risk of phishing and identity fraud at a time when fraudsters are using increasingly persuasive methods to gain access to people’s data and bank accounts. Smart-ID+ will be available in the Internet Bank from 16 June, and will also reach the mobile app before Midsummer Day.
According to Sandra Horma, Head of AFC Risk Integration at LHV, the growing interest of customers in additional security solutions shows that people’s awareness of digital security has increased significantly in recent years. ‘People are increasingly looking for ways to protect both their own and their loved ones’ money and personal data. Smart-ID+ makes life significantly more difficult for fraudsters and gives people greater control over how they identify themselves,’ explains Horma.
Smart-ID+ allows you to link the login directly to the user’s Smart-ID app. Instead of entering the personal identification code, identification takes place via QR code or through an app-to-app connection. This reduces the risk that a fraudster can initiate a login on behalf of the customer and direct the victim to confirm it unknowingly.
‘Most instances of fraud today are based on human manipulation, rather than on technological weaknesses. Therefore, in addition to secure technical solutions, people’s vigilance and conscious behaviour continue to be important,’ adds Horma.
LHV recommends that customers use multiple authentication methods to ensure that access to banking services is maintained even if one solution temporarily fails. This may be necessary, for example, in the event of a device failure, loss of the phone, or a change of phone number.
Last September, LHV added multi-factor authentication (MFA) as an additional security measure for its customers. This solution helps reduce instances of fraudsters attempting to access the customer’s account using a new device or a login different from the usual one.
LHV recommends that people regularly update their Smart-ID app, use additional security layers where possible, and be extremely cautious about unexpected calls, messages and links that ask for PIN codes or access to their bank account.
