On 23 October, Estonia lost a distinguished figure in banking and entrepreneurship —Heldur Meerits.
The Estonian business landscape bids farewell to one of its most influential and sharpest minds. His broad worldview, boundless curiosity, and deep sensitivity to social issues have left an enduring mark on Estonia’s economy, banking sector, and society at large.
Heldur was a visionary. His analytical mind and strategic insight helped shape Estonian banking into what it is today. He possessed not only a remarkable business sense but also a rare ability to connect people, making him a valued leader, board member, and collaborator. Those fortunate enough to have worked with him gained not just knowledge and experience, but personal growth. Heldur inspired those around him—both professionally and personally—while always remaining warm and supportive. That is the hallmark of a truly great individual.
He was inspiring. Ignitable. A motivator. Perceptive and decisive. A true leader who could unify diverse teams and help people recognize their strengths. He held high expectations—of others and of himself—but was always honest. Heldur wore no masks. When things were going well, it was clear to everyone. And if something needed improvement, he found an elegant way to say it. His standards were high, and he upheld them impeccably himself. He was driven by a deep desire to support the development of Estonian enterprise, and he spoke passionately about it. His words carried weight.
Though deeply committed and tirelessly hard-working, Heldur valued humanity and cooperation above all. He was kind and observant, able to notice what others overlooked. He always found time to listen, understand, and support. His positive outlook and solution-oriented mindset fostered an environment where ideas could flourish, and people could grow. His impact continues through the many leaders who first found their wings with his guidance.
With Heldur’s passing, Estonia has lost more than a brilliant thinker, a capable leader, and a passionate patriot. Our society has lost a man whose values, ethics, and warmth will continue to echo throughout the business world for a long time.
Heldur’s legacy lives on in the many people he inspired. His life proves how one person can embody so much—intellectual depth, bold visions, refined humour, and above all, warmth. At LHV Group’s supervisory board, we had the privilege of experiencing this firsthand. The memory of those moments will always stay with us, always with that familiar warm smile on his face.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to all of Heldur’s loved ones.
Farewell, Heldur. Thank you—for everything.
